Phillip Tietz's 24th-minute strike gives Mainz a 1-0 win away to Schalke

Anthony Caci's pass set up Phillip Tietz for the only goal in Gelsenkirchen, and Mainz held on despite Schalke controlling less of the ball but pushing for an equaliser.

One goal settled this one, and it came early. Anthony Caci found Phillip Tietz on 24 minutes, and Tietz's finish was enough for a Mainz side that then spent much of the rest of the afternoon without the ball — Schalke had 53.7% of possession and the better of the corner count, 7 to 1 going the home side's way including offsides won in that area, but only three shots on target to Mainz's six told the real story.

It is Tietz's fifth league goal of the campaign, putting him level at the top of the Bundesliga's scoring charts. Two bookings either side of half-time, both for Mainz's Nadiem Amiri and Kaishu Sano, were the closest the game came to real needle, and neither side's discipline became an issue after that.
