Freiburg 1-3 Bayern Munich: Olise scores and sets one up as leaders go top

Bayern Munich moved top of the Bundesliga with a 3-1 win at Freiburg that was more comfortable than the scoreline across 90 minutes suggests. Dayot Upamecano opened the scoring in the 16th minute, Serge Gnabry doubled it just before half-time, and although a Tom Bischof own goal cut the gap in the second half, Michael Olise settled it with a goal of his own deep into stoppage time.

Upamecano, not someone regularly on the scoresheet, got to Michael Olise's delivery first to head Bayern in front. Gnabry made it two in first-half stoppage time, turning in a cross from full-back Nathaniel Brown — Bayern's front two were not even the ones scoring, and Freiburg still could not get close to either ball.

Freiburg's response, and the goal that undid it

Julian Schuster's side had the better of the opening stages of the second half and got a route back into the game in the 82nd minute, though not in the way they would have wanted: Bayern substitute pressure forced Tom Bischof into turning the ball into his own net, with the goal credited to the hosts. For a few minutes it looked like it might set up a grandstand finish.

Bayern closed it out instead. Five minutes into stoppage time, Michael Olise — already the provider for the opening goal — got on the scoresheet himself, finishing to make it 3-1 and put the result beyond doubt. It was the kind of goal involvement Bayern have come to expect from him since his move from Crystal Palace: a goal and an assist in the same afternoon, with neither coming from a standing start.

Freiburg's run of form stalls

Freiburg arrived off the back of their first defeat of the season, 1-2 at home to Bayer Leverkusen, and this result makes it back-to-back losses for the first time in the campaign. They stay 3rd in name, but Leverkusen are now level with them on points, and both Bayern and Dortmund have pulled clear at the top on goal difference.

Bayern go top

Bayern are unbeaten in the league this season — this is their fifth win in seven Bundesliga games, with draws against Schalke and Augsburg the only games they have not won. Their goal difference — plus-19 after seven games — is comfortably the best in the division, eleven clear of second-placed Dortmund's plus-8.

That gap in goal difference is what moves Bayern above Dortmund into 1st, even though both sides sit on 17 points after seven games. With all 18 Bundesliga clubs now level on games played, matchweek 7 is complete, and Bayern go into the next international window top of the table by the finest possible margin: a tiebreaker rather than a points gap.

What's next

Bayern Munich move to 1st on 17 points, ahead of Borussia Dortmund on goal difference. Freiburg stay 3rd on 13 points, just ahead of Bayer Leverkusen in 4th on the same tiebreaker that now separates the top two.
