Rennes put together their biggest win of the season so far, beating Auxerre 4-1 at Roazhon Park to climb into the Ligue 1 top three. E. Lepaul opened the scoring in the 15th minute, C. Archer levelled for Auxerre ten minutes later, and A. Thomasson restored the lead just after the break before Rennes added two more in stoppage time.

Auxerre's reply through Archer kept the game level for half an hour, but Thomasson's finish early in the second half put Rennes back in front for good. The game only got away from the visitors in the closing minutes, when Dia added two goals in stoppage time to turn a one-goal game into a rout. Rennes picked up four yellow cards along the way — A. Rouault in the 50th minute, Lepaul and Thomasson both in the 59th, and D. Cisse in the 90th — but finished with eleven men on the pitch throughout.

Rennes' six league matches so far — a heavy defeat at Lyon is the only blemish on an otherwise strong start.

That 4-0 loss at Lyon on matchday 5 was Rennes' only defeat of the campaign, and they answered it in the most emphatic way possible. Auxerre, meanwhile, had won their previous two matches — against Nice and Brest — before this one, so the result snaps a two-game winning run and puts them back in the bottom half.

What the result changes

Rennes move up to third with 13 points from six matches, level on points with second-placed Lille but behind on goal difference, and firmly inside the Champions League places for now. Auxerre stay on 6 points but drop to 16th, in the relegation play-off spot, after conceding four goals in an away match for the first time this season. Rennes travel to Angers next; Auxerre host Lens.
