Nice needed a late goal to see off Strasbourg at the Allianz Riviera, coming from behind to win 2-1 and make it back-to-back league victories for the first time this season. Dario Essugo had given the visitors a 41st-minute lead, but Pape Diop turned the ball into his own net just before the break, and Jonathan Clauss settled it with 9 minutes left on the clock.

How the goals went in

  1. 41' — Dario Essugo puts Strasbourg ahead, 0-1
  2. 45+1' — Pape Diop turns the ball into his own net, 1-1
  3. 81' — Jonathan Clauss finishes from a Sofiane Diop pass, 2-1

Strasbourg's lead lasted barely four minutes. Essugo's goal just before the half-hour mark looked like it might hold Nice at arm's length going into the break, but the own goal in first-half stoppage time wiped that out immediately and sent the sides in level. Oso picked up a yellow card for Strasbourg early in the second half, and Sofiane Diop was booked for Nice with 15 minutes left — moments before he turned provider for the winner.

Nice's six league matches so far — one draw, one loss, then back-to-back wins to close the run.

Nice had gone only one win in their first five matches of the season before beating Lille 2-1 on matchday 5. Doing it again against Strasbourg, and from behind, is the first time this campaign Nice have strung two league wins together — a small run, but a meaningful one for a side that opened with two defeats in their first five outings.

What the result changes

The win lifts Nice from 15th to 9th with 8 points from six matches, their best position of the season so far. Strasbourg, who had taken 7 points from their first five games, stay on the same total after the defeat and slip to 11th — a reminder of how tight mid-table is in Ligue 1 this season, where two points separate 7th from 14th. Nice host Troyes next; Strasbourg's trip to face Lyon is their next assignment.
