RB Leipzig put last week's 6-1 mauling at Bayern Munich behind them in the best way available: a comfortable 4-0 win over SV Elversberg at the Red Bull Arena. Tidiam Gomis broke the deadlock just after half-time, substitute Rômulo scored twice either side of a Christoph Baumgartner header, and Antonio Nusa — introduced to the starting line-up after starring from the bench in recent weeks — set up two of the four himself.

The game was goalless and tight for the first 45 minutes, with Elversberg defending in numbers and happy to let Leipzig have the ball without the final pass to go with it. That changed three minutes into the second half, when Gomis converted a Nusa cutback, and Leipzig never let Elversberg back into it from there. Rômulo's double — a composed finish in the 66th minute and a stoppage-time fourth — turned a routine home win into Leipzig's biggest margin of victory since their 5-0 defeat of Hamburger SV in September.

A response after the heaviest loss of the season

Leipzig had lost back-to-back games before this — 1-6 at Bayern Munich in the league and then 1-4 at Real Madrid in the Champions League — their worst run of the season after a promising start. This result is exactly the kind of bounce-back performance they needed: a clean sheet, a goal difference boosted by four without reply, and a reminder that the Bayern result was an outlier rather than a trend.

Elversberg had been building a reputation as one of the league's surprise packages, coming into this game off the back of a wild 4-3 win at Augsburg. That run stops here: this is their heaviest defeat of the Bundesliga season, and their discipline suffered with it — 18 fouls committed to Leipzig's 10, and a tally of six shots conceded on target in a game in which they could not muster one themselves until stoppage time.

What's next

The win lifts Leipzig to 12 points from seven games, up into 5th — their highest position of the season so far, slotting in behind Bayer Leverkusen and ahead of 1. FSV Mainz 05 among the chasing pack. Elversberg stay on 10 points but drop to 7th, their goal difference now negative for the first time this season after conceding four without reply.
