Borussia Dortmund needed two substitutes to break down a stubborn Eintracht Frankfurt rearguard on Saturday, and it was worth the wait. Maximilian Beier, on for only ten minutes, swept in the only goal of the game in the 80th minute after Jobe Bellingham — introduced moments earlier — slipped him through, and a performance that had threatened to end goalless turned into another three points at Signal Iduna Park.

For long spells it looked like Frankfurt's game plan was working. They sat deep, conceded the ball and possession almost two-to-one, and restricted Dortmund's front line to half-chances through the first hour. But a back line missing any real control of the game's territory — Dortmund won 13 corners to Frankfurt's one and dominated the final third throughout — was always going to crack eventually, and when Dortmund's two substitutes combined inside a couple of minutes of each other coming on, it did.

A game Dortmund controlled but could not open up

The numbers tell a one-sided story that the scoreline does not. Dortmund had 58.4% of the ball, completed 385 of 484 passes (79.5%) against Frankfurt's 270 of 361 (74.8%), and put five shots on target to Frankfurt's three. Frankfurt, for their part, were disciplined without the ball but undisciplined with fouls — conceding 12 to Dortmund's seven — and picked up two bookings, both for players in their own half trying to break up Dortmund attacks: Nnamdi Collins in the 58th minute and Farès Chaïbi five minutes later. Dortmund finished the match without a single card.

Two very different runs coming in

Dortmund arrived at this game on the back of two straight Bundesliga draws — 2-2 at home to Werder Bremen and then 0-0 away at Union Berlin — either side of a Champions League defeat at Bodø/Glimt that had briefly interrupted their title challenge. This win ends that two-match run without a league victory and puts them back on track after a stretch that had cost them top spot to Bayern Munich on goal difference.

Frankfurt's picture is messier. They were thrashed 6-0 at RB Leipzig earlier in October, recovered with a 1-0 win over Köln, and now lose again — their third defeat in six Bundesliga games and a result that pushes their goals-against column to 17 in seven matches, one of the leakier records outside the bottom three. Mahmoud Dahoud's and Robin Koch's side have alternated results all autumn without ever stringing two wins together.

The substitutes who decided it

Beier's matchwinner carried a family subplot of its own. He arrived at Dortmund from Hoffenheim in August 2024 for a fee reported above €28m, brought in explicitly to replace the departing Niclas Füllkrug, and has since become the club's first-choice backup striker behind Serhou Guirassy — exactly the kind of impact substitution Dortmund paid for. His assister, Jobe Bellingham, joined from Sunderland in June 2025 on a five-year deal, following the path his older brother Jude took through Dortmund on the way to Real Madrid. Between them, two players who started the match on the bench needed less than a combined fifteen minutes on the pitch to win it.

What's next

The win takes Dortmund to 17 points from seven games — provisionally above Bayern Munich (14 points from six), who are still to play their round-7 fixture, with Freiburg and Bayer Leverkusen (both on 13) making up the rest of the early pace-setters. Frankfurt stay 11th on 8 points from seven, their goal difference now at -7, still comfortably clear of the relegation zone but with little margin for another heavy defeat.
