Bayern Munich had put six past a Bundesliga opponent once already this season, and they did it again on Saturday evening, taking apart a RB Leipzig side that had arrived at the Allianz Arena in genuine title-race form. By full time it was 6-1, and the only surprise was that Leipzig's name was on the scoresheet at all.

Luis Díaz was the story of the night. The Colombian scored in the 12th minute, again in the 47th and completed his hat-trick in the 69th, taking an opening pass from Joshua Kimmich for the first and finishing moves started by Harry Kane and Michael Olise for the other two. In between, Aleksandar Pavlovic and Olise himself scored, and Kane got his name on the board too — not as a scorer this time, but as the provider for two of Bayern's six.

Six goals, five different names involved

  • 12' — Luis Díaz (Bayern Munich), assisted by Joshua Kimmich
  • 26' — Aleksandar Pavlovic (Bayern Munich), assisted by Luis Díaz
  • 34' — Michael Olise (Bayern Munich), assisted by Harry Kane
  • 47' — Luis Díaz (Bayern Munich), assisted by Harry Kane
  • 52' — Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), assisted by Nathaniel Brown
  • 69' — Luis Díaz (Bayern Munich), assisted by Michael Olise
  • 90'+1' — Andrija Maksimovic (RB Leipzig), assisted by Brajan Gruda

What stands out beyond the scoreline is how evenly the goal involvements were spread through Bayern's front line. Kane, so often the one finishing these moves himself, instead turned provider twice; Olise scored once and set up two more; Díaz did the finishing. Pavlovic, a midfielder, got in on it too. It was a collective pulling-apart of a Leipzig team that had won three of its last five.

A result that was built in the first half

The pattern was set early. Díaz's opener came inside 12 minutes, and Bayern were already 3-0 up by half-time through Pavlovic and Olise — both goals arriving within an eight-minute spell either side of the half-hour mark. Leipzig's back line, so disciplined in their 6-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt a week earlier, had no answer to the pace in behind that Díaz and Kane kept running into. By the hour mark it was 5-0, and the only question left was how many more Bayern would add before the whistle.

Leipzig did get on the board, Andrija Maksimovic converting a chance created by substitute Brajan Gruda in stoppage time, but it did nothing to change the shape of the afternoon. Konrad Laimer's 51st-minute yellow card was the only blemish on Bayern's discipline; otherwise this was as clean a performance as the club has produced all season.

Two very different roads into this game

Bayern went in on the back of an excellent run: a 2-1 Super Cup win over Dortmund in August, a 5-0 Champions League rout of Bodø/Glimt, a 7-0 demolition of Union Berlin, and two draws since — 2-2 at Augsburg and a wild 3-3 away at Viking in Europe — that had briefly interrupted an otherwise flawless opening to the season. Going into matchday 6 they were third in the table on 11 points from five games, having scored 16 and conceded only 4, and this result pushes those attacking numbers further clear of the rest of the division.

Leipzig's form had actually been trending the right way before this. They had lost to Werder Bremen and to Bayer Leverkusen either side of a Champions League defeat at Como, but had won three of their last four across all competitions, including that 6-0 flattening of Eintracht Frankfurt and a 1-0 win over PSV Eindhoven in Europe. They went into matchday 6 fifth on 9 points, level on points with the chasing pack below the top four, and this result is the heaviest Bundesliga defeat they have suffered this season.

What's next

Bayern's attacking numbers now read 22 goals scored in six league games against four conceded, a gap that is starting to separate them from everyone chasing Freiburg and Dortmund at the top. Leipzig, who had been building a case as dark horses for a Champions League spot, now have to show this was an off-day rather than a pattern before the kind of form that got them here starts to erode.
