Sporting CP 2-3 LASK: three goals in 13 minutes end the hosts' perfect start
Luis Suárez scored either side of a three-goal LASK spell, but it wasn't enough — LASK beat Sporting CP 2-3 at Estádio José Alvalade for their first points of the Champions League league phase.
Sporting CP's perfect start to the Champions League league phase came to an end at Estádio José Alvalade, LASK scoring three times inside 13 minutes either side of the hour to win 2-3 despite trailing to an early Luis Suárez penalty.
Suárez opened the scoring from the spot in the 5th minute, but Christoph Lang levelled for LASK in the 15th, assisted by Kasper Jørgensen. The visitors took the lead for good with goals from Sasa Kalajdzic in the 63rd minute, set up by Robert Ljubicic, and Krystof Danek five minutes later, assisted by Samuel Adeniran. Suárez pulled one back in the 89th minute to complete his brace, but there was no time left for Sporting to find a third. The game was a disciplinary mess for the visitors: LASK conceded 22 fouls to Sporting's 10 and picked up five yellow cards, against two for the hosts.
A first defeat, a first win
Sporting had won both of their opening Champions League matches, 3-1 at home to Galatasaray and 2-0 away at Lens, and arrived at this game as one of the league phase's handful of sides with a perfect record. This defeat leaves them on six points from three matches. LASK, beaten 0-1 by AEK Athens and then thrashed 3-6 by Liverpool in their first two games, picked up their first points of the campaign here and move to three points from three — their heaviest defeat of the season now paired with their best result.
