Sabah picked up their first points of this season's Champions League league phase, beating Slavia Praha 2-0 thanks to goals either side of the hour mark from Kaheem Parris and substitute Joy-Lance Mickels. It was a physical, foul-heavy contest that produced five yellow cards and almost 30 fouls between the two sides.

A second-half breakthrough

Parris put Sabah ahead four minutes into the second half, converting a chance created by Ivan Lepinjica. Slavia pushed for an equaliser without ever really threatening the Sabah goal, and the game was settled in the 88th minute when Mickels, himself a half-time change, finished off a move started by fellow substitute Patrick Orphe M'Bina.

A rough start gets worse for Slavia

Slavia's opening Champions League fixture had already been painful — a 3-2 defeat at home to Lens in which they led twice with a man advantage before conceding twice in stoppage time. This result leaves them without a point from two matches, and without a goal scored in the second of them, as they head back into Czech domestic football to regroup.

A physical night

Discipline was a theme throughout: Veljko Simic, Steve Solvet and Akim Zedadka were all booked for Sabah, while Emmanuel Dennis Ayaosi and substitute Oskar Kubiak picked up yellow cards for Slavia. Between them the sides committed 29 fouls across the 90 minutes, a reflection of how little space either side was prepared to give.

What's next

Sabah's first win of the league phase lifts them off the bottom of the 36-club table, while Slavia Praha remain without a point after two matches and face a fight to stay in touch with the knockout play-off places. Both sides are back in European action for matchday 3.
