Two first-half penalties from Federico Redondo and Fer Niño put Elche in control at the Estadio de Vallecas, and Germán Valera's 68th-minute strike turned a routine win into a rout. Rayo Vallecano, who had already shown it was possible to drop points after a run of draws, ended up with nothing at all, beaten 3-0 by a side that arrived with the division's worst attacking record.

Two penalties inside 13 minutes

Elche needed only 23 minutes to go ahead, Federico Redondo sending the first penalty down the middle, and Fer Niño made it two from the spot in the 36th minute. Both awards came in a half in which Rayo's discipline cracked under pressure — Pathé Ciss and Adrià Pedrosa were both booked before the break, and the hosts never looked settled at the back.

Germán Valera put the result beyond doubt in the 68th minute, finishing off a move started by substitute Facundo Buonanotte moments after he had come off the bench. It was the kind of goal that turns a comfortable lead into a statement result, and Rayo's response — three more yellow cards in the last half hour, for Camello, Fernández and García among the home ranks — said as much about the afternoon as the scoreline did.

Two very different runs of form

Rayo had drawn three of their last five coming in — against Alavés, Osasuna and Getafe — a run that kept them unbeaten but stuck on nine points for three matchdays running. This was their first defeat since losing 1-4 at Real Madrid in September, and it came at home, against a side that had won only once all season. Elche, for their part, arrived with their last five reading two draws either side of a win over Espanyol, and a goalless stretch against Celta Vigo and Villarreal that had put only one win on their record. A 3-0 away day, with two penalties and a late third, was as far from that pattern as it gets.

Line-ups

  • Rayo Vallecano (4-2-3-1): Emil Audero — Mujaid Sadick, Florian Lejeune, Adrià Pedrosa, Iván Balliu — Pedro Díaz, Unai López, Pathé Ciss — Sergio Camello, Álvaro García, Jorge de Frutos
  • Elche (4-3-3): Matías Dituro — Víctor Chust, Roy Revivo, Buba Sangaré, Javier Morcillo — Thomas Lemar, Gonzalo Villar, Federico Redondo — Fer Niño, Germán Valera, Lucas Cepeda

What the result means

Rayo Vallecano drop from 14th to 16th, their nine points now built on a worse goal difference than before. Elche, meanwhile, climb from 18th all the way to 13th, their first win since beating Espanyol in mid-September pulling them clear of the bottom four on goal difference alone — a reminder that in a tight relegation group, one result like this can move a side several places in either direction.
