Álex Berenguer was directly involved in every goal as Athletic Club put four past Getafe without reply at San Mamés. He opened the scoring himself from a free-kick in the 17th minute, then teed up Iñaki Williams, Aitor Paredes and Yuri Berchiche either side of the hour mark.
Williams doubled the lead at 35', turning in Berenguer's cross from close range. Paredes made it three with a header in the 70th minute, and Berchiche added the fourth in the 88th — both goals built the same way, from the right, through Berenguer.
Getafe down to ten
Getafe's afternoon got worse as it went on. Ramón Terrats, Dani Carvajal and Johan Mojica were all booked in the first hour, and Mario Martín saw a second yellow turn red in the 86th minute, leaving the visitors to finish the final stretch a man light and four goals down.
