Eleven shots on target, nine saves

Racing put 11 shots on target to Valencia's two and still had to settle for a point, because Stole Dimitrievski made nine saves. Valencia's expected goals, 1.70 to 1.31, were nonetheless higher, from four big chances created to Racing's one, so the draw was a fair reflection of two sides who each had better moments.

Line-ups

  • Racing Santander (4-1-4-1): Julen Agirrezabala, Jeanuël Belocian, Pablo Ramon, Matteo Prati, Jorge Salinas, Alvaro Mantilla, André Almeida, Iván Martín, Iñigo Vicente, Sergio Canales, Yassir Zabiri. Came on: Maguette Gueye, Aarón Martín, Pablo García, Andrés Martín, Asier Villalibre.
  • Valencia (5-4-1): Stole Dimitrievski, Pepelu, Justin de Haas, Mouctar Diakhaby, José Gayà, Pablo Maffeo, Guido Rodríguez, Filip Ugrinic, Javi Guerra, Dani Raba, Hugo Duro. Came on: David Otorbi, Harvey Elliott, Aliou Dieng, Arnaut Danjuma, Arnau Martínez.

Two difficult runs collide

Racing arrived on the back of a miserable spell: their last five league games read W L W L L, including a 2-7 defeat at Barcelona and a 0-5 loss at Celta Vigo either side of a 2-1 home win over Alavés. Nine goals scored and eighteen conceded in that run told their own story heading into Sunday.

Valencia's picture was just as bleak, with one win in their last five (L L L W L), four goals scored across those five matches and twelve conceded, including a 0-5 home defeat to Barcelona and a 2-3 loss at Real Sociedad last time out. A point at Racing is, by that measure, a result closer to overdue than fortunate.

What the result changes

Racing are 15th on 8 points from eight matches, two points clear of Elche in 17th, with Osasuna in 16th also on 8. Valencia are 19th on 5 points from eight, level on points with Levante in 18th, who have played two games fewer, and a point above Málaga in 20th.

Corrections

  • October 12, 2026: The earlier version said that only Elche and Málaga were below Valencia in the table, and gave both clubs' league positions before the match, none of which we could support. Elche are 17th, above Valencia, and only Málaga are below them. The scorers, line-ups and statistics were also missing and have been added.
