Hamburger SV come from behind to beat Hoffenheim 2-3, with Miro Muheim's stoppage-time goal the winner

Yussuf Poulsen's early goal and a Sebastiaan Bornauw own goal either side of Bambasé Conté's strike left it 2-2, before Terem Moffi and then Miro Muheim, deep into stoppage time, gave Hamburger SV a 2-3 win at the PreZero Arena.

Hamburger SV won at the PreZero Arena for the first time this season, scoring twice in the last ten minutes to beat Hoffenheim 2-3 and move off the bottom of the table they had occupied for most of the campaign. Yussuf Poulsen put the visitors ahead inside the first quarter-hour, Sebastiaan Bornauw's own goal and Bambasé Conté's finish for the hosts made it 2-1 Hoffenheim by the hour mark, and Terem Moffi and Miro Muheim turned the game on its head in the closing stages.

An early lead, erased, then taken back late

Poulsen gave Hamburg the perfect start in the 12th minute, tapping in after Nicolás Capaldo's deflected shot had come back off the post. Hoffenheim hauled themselves level deep into first-half stoppage time: Fisnik Asllani's follow-up forced Bornauw into turning the ball into his own net, and Bambasé Conté — teed up by Asllani again — put the hosts 2-1 up in the 53rd minute. Two further goals were chalked off by VAR along the way, one for a foul in the build-up to a disallowed Conté effort and another for handball against Otto Stange.

Hamburg's response came late but came twice. Terem Moffi, set up by Miro Muheim, levelled it at 2-2 in the 83rd minute, and Muheim turned scorer himself in the fourth minute of stoppage time to complete the turnaround and send the away end into celebration.

A second red card of the season for Bernardo

  • 55' — Bernardo (Hoffenheim), yellow
  • 65' — Bernardo (Hoffenheim), second yellow and red
  • 80' — Leon Avdullahu (Hoffenheim), yellow

Hoffenheim played the last 25 minutes with ten men after Bernardo picked up a second yellow card in the 65th minute, and it was in that spell that Hamburg struck twice to turn a losing position into a winning one. Referee Harm Osmers took charge.

Two struggling sides heading the wrong way

Both clubs arrived at the PreZero Arena with one win apiece from their first four games. Hoffenheim's read L L W L — a win over Stuttgart sandwiched between three defeats, including a 1-3 loss at Paderborn last time out — and they had scored seven and conceded ten across those matches. Hamburg's form read L L L W, their only win a 2-1 result at home to Köln on Matchday 4 that had ended a winless, scoreless start to the season; before that they had conceded 13 goals without scoring one. Going into the round, Hoffenheim sat 14th on three points and Hamburg 16th, also on three.

This was a different complexion of result for Hamburg: an away win, their first in the league this season, built on a four-minute double at the death rather than an afternoon of control. For Hoffenheim, the collapse is now their fourth defeat in five Bundesliga games, and the manner of it — leading 2-1 with 25 minutes to go, down to ten men — will sting more than most.
