Genoa 1-0 Venezia: Ellertsson goal is enough despite ten corners against them

Mikael Ellertsson's 25th-minute goal, set up by Stephan El Shaarawy, was enough for Genoa to beat Venezia 1-0 at the Luigi Ferraris, even though the visitors had more of the ball and won ten corners to the hosts' two.

Genoa had less of the ball, fewer shots on target and a fraction of Venezia's corner count, but they had the only goal that mattered. Mikael Ellertsson converted a Stephan El Shaarawy pass in the 25th minute, and that single moment of quality was enough to see off a Venezia side that pressed for an equaliser without ever finding one, in a 1-0 win at the Luigi Ferraris.

One chance taken, several wasted

Venezia had 55% of the possession and five shots on target to Genoa's four, and won ten corners to the hosts' two — by most measures the busier side. None of it produced a goal. Genoa's single moment of quality, Ellertsson finishing off El Shaarawy's pass midway through the first half, settled a game their underlying numbers did not suggest they would win, a reminder that a shot count and a corner tally are not the same thing as a scoreline.

Form going in opposite directions

Genoa's last five before this had read L D L W L, with their only win in that run a 2-1 home victory over Fiorentina, and this result gives them back-to-back home wins for the first time this season after a 0-2 defeat at Roma in between. Venezia's last five read L L L L W — four straight defeats before a surprise 1-0 win at Napoli — and this loss means that rare win stays an isolated result rather than the start of a run.

What's next

Genoa climb to 16th on 7 points, pulling level with Monza and out of the bottom three for now. Venezia stay bottom of the table on 3 points after eight matches, with Udinese, Fiorentina and Parma all above them on 4 points, as the gap to safety keeps the pressure on.
