Venezia 2-4 Fiorentina: Franco Mastantuono's hat-trick gives Paolo Vanoli his first win

Fiorentina had lost all three of their opening matches, conceding nine goals along the way, when Akor Adams put Venezia ahead in the 22nd minute at the Penzo. Then Franco Mastantuono happened, twice inside a minute, and a game that looked like it was heading toward a fourth straight defeat turned into Paolo Vanoli's first win since coming back for a second spell in charge.

Two goals in a minute

1. 22' — Venezia go ahead: Akor Adams finishes to make it 1-0.
2. 29' — Mastantuono levels it with his left foot, 1-1.
3. 30' — A minute later, Mastantuono strikes again to complete the turnaround, 2-1 at the break.
4. 66' — Substitute Mateo Pellegrino makes it 3-1, set up by Nicolo Fagioli.
5. 84' — Mastantuono completes his hat-trick, 4-1.
6. 86' — Antoine Hainaut pulls one back for Venezia, 4-2 final.

At 19 years old, Mastantuono — on loan from Real Madrid — became the youngest player to score a Serie A hat-trick for Fiorentina, and one of the youngest to do it in the competition's history. Vanoli had made five changes to the side that lost to Torino the previous week and handed a full debut to new signing Beto, and the gamble paid off inside half an hour.

Where it leaves both sides

Before this round, Guriball's table had Fiorentina bottom of Serie A on zero points from three matches, with a goal difference of -8, and Venezia 18th, also without a point, at -5. The win takes Fiorentina to three points and improves their goal difference to -6 — still deep in the relegation places, but off the foot of the table after back-to-back-to-back losses to Roma, Frosinone and Torino to open the season. Venezia stay winless after four matches, now with a goal difference of -7, the only side in the division yet to pick up a point this season.
