It was a result that suited neither side's recent momentum. Schalke had beaten Union Berlin 3-1 away in their last league outing after drawing 0-0 with champions Bayern Munich and losing 3-0 at Augsburg on the opening weekend — a stop-start start that this draw did little to settle either way. Elversberg arrived on the back of a 1-2 home defeat to Bayern Munich, having opened their Bundesliga return with a surprise 3-2 win away at Bayer Leverkusen.
