Younes Ebnoutalib's hat-trick can't stop Union Berlin drawing 3-3 with Frankfurt

Six goals, a hat-trick, and a stoppage-time equaliser: Union Berlin and Eintracht Frankfurt opened the season with a 3-3 draw at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei that neither side could quite win.

Union struck first through Emmanuel Latte Lath after three minutes. Frankfurt then turned to Younes Ebnoutalib, who scored twice inside two minutes to put the visitors 2-1 up before the quarter-hour and added his third just after the hour. It made him the first Frankfurt player to score a Bundesliga hat-trick since Luka Jović in 2018.

Union hit back late

At 3-1 down, Union kept coming. Leopold Querfeld pulled one back on 79 minutes from an Andrej Juranović delivery, and in the second minute of stoppage time Querfeld turned provider for Tim Skarke to force the draw. The referee was Bastian Dankert.

What's next

The Bundesliga table will not settle until matchday 1 is complete, but a point each leaves both sides mid-table on the opening weekend. Union will be happier with how they got it, having twice trailed by two; Frankfurt will wonder how a hat-trick from Ebnoutalib brought only a draw. Matchday 2 follows next weekend.
