RB Leipzig thrash winless Hamburger SV 5-0, with Antonio Nusa involved in three goals

RB Leipzig put five goals past Hamburger SV without reply, their biggest win of the young Bundesliga season and the heaviest defeat yet for a Hamburg side that is still searching for its first goal of the campaign after three matchdays.

Tidiam Gomis opened the scoring in the 17th minute, finishing a move built by Brajan Gruda and Ezechiel Banzuzi, and Antonio Nusa doubled the lead just 11 minutes later after a Hamburg build-up error handed Leipzig the ball back in a dangerous area. The home side then decided the game in a five-minute burst after the break: Willi Orbán made it 3-0 in the 72nd minute, Christopher Nkunku struck from around 14 metres for the fourth two minutes later, and Rômulo added a fifth in the 77th minute after another Hamburg defensive mistake.

Nusa's afternoon

Antonio Nusa was the game's outstanding performer, scoring once and setting up two more for his first match with three scoring involvements in the Bundesliga. It was also his second goal in as many home matches, continuing a strong start to life in Leipzig colours that head coach Miguel Demichelis will be glad to see, having made five changes to his side following a Champions League defeat in Como in midweek.

Rock bottom for Hamburg

For Hamburger SV, this is about as bad as an opening month can get. Newly promoted and still finding their feet at this level, they had already lost their opening two matches — 0-2 at Borussia Dortmund and 0-5 at home to Mainz — without scoring a single goal, and this result adds a third straight defeat and five more conceded to a goal difference that now reads minus twelve from three games. Head coach Merlin Polzin made changes after the heavy home loss to Mainz, including handing a Bundesliga debut to 19-year-old Shafiq Nandja, but a debut inside a 5-0 defeat is a difficult way for a teenager to start his top-flight career.

Leipzig, meanwhile, bounce back from a midweek Champions League defeat in the best way available — a home rout that takes them to nine goals scored in three Bundesliga games this season, level with the division's most potent attacks, after a mixed start that had included a win over Borussia Mönchengladbach and a defeat to Werder Bremen. With the international break now arriving, Hamburg have a fortnight to find the first goal of their Bundesliga return before the fixtures resume.
