Haaland's double sends Manchester City past Porto 0-2 in Enzo Maresca's first Champions League night

Manchester City opened the post-Guardiola era in the Champions League the way Erling Haaland has opened most nights since he arrived at the club: with two goals and very little fuss. City won 2-0 at the Estádio do Dragão, Haaland scoring early in the second half and again deep into stoppage time, and Porto managing not a single shot on target across the full 90 minutes.

The first goal came shortly after the restart, Haaland turning in an Enzo Fernández cross from close range. The second arrived right at the end, a first-time finish from a Rayan Aït-Nouri cutback that put the result beyond any doubt it was already beyond. Diogo Costa, Porto's goalkeeper, had kept the scoreline respectable for an hour with a string of saves before City finally broke through, and finished the night having faced more shots without conceding than most keepers manage against City in a full ninety.

The first Champions League night of a new era

This was Manchester City's first Champions League campaign without Pep Guardiola on the touchline since 2015-16 — a full decade of one manager's stamp on the club's European nights, now handed to Enzo Maresca. There was no sign of a side finding its feet: City dominated with a fluency that looked continuous with everything Guardiola built, not a reset. Whether that continuity holds up against sterner opposition than Porto later in the league phase is the question this result cannot yet answer, but a comfortable away win with a clean sheet is as good a start as any incoming coach could have asked for.

Haaland keeps climbing the all-time list

The brace took Haaland to 59 Champions League goals — the seventh-highest tally in the competition's history — accumulated in a fraction of the appearances of most of the names above him. He remains, by some distance, the fastest player to reach every scoring milestone the competition has to offer, and a two-goal night against a side that barely touched the ball inside its own box was, for him, close to a routine outing rather than a highlight-reel one.

A record night for the wrong reasons in Porto

For the hosts, this was uncomfortable reading on almost every count. Porto had 0.22 expected goals to City's 2.31, and failed to register a shot on target in a European match for the first time since February 2017 — the kind of number that does not show up on the scoreboard but explains the gulf better than the 2-0 does on its own. They were also caught offside seven times, more than in their previous seven matches in major continental competition combined. Amid all of that, 18-year-old midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi's Champions League debut stood out on the other side of the ball: he won possession back seven times, the most by a player aged 18 or younger on a Champions League debut for a club since Benfica's Antonio Silva against Maccabi Haifa in September 2022 — a small consolation on a night with very few for the home side.

Manchester City start the new 36-team league phase with a maximum three points and a clean sheet on the road, exactly the kind of banked result that matters most before the schedule turns to tougher away nights later in the autumn.
