Paris FC 0-0 Lyon: two of Ligue 1's unbeaten sides cancel each other out

Neither Paris FC nor Lyon had lost through the opening three rounds of the Ligue 1 season, and neither found a way to lose this one either. Paris FC had much the better of the chances at the Jean Bouin — 57% of the possession, six shots to Lyon's two, four of them on target to Lyon's none — but Lyon's defence held firm, and four matchdays in, both clubs are still searching for their first domestic defeat.

Paris FC dominant, but wasteful in front of goal

Paris FC arrived on the back of consecutive wins over Nice (3-0) and Marseille (3-2), a run built on quick, direct attacking football that had brought them six goals in two matches. None of that firepower showed up against Lyon: six shots, four on target, and nothing to show for it at full time. It was also their first game this season without a goal — after scoring in each of their first three matches, it snapped a run that had made them one of the more entertaining attacking sides in the division so far.

A second clean sheet on the road for Lyon

For Lyon, the result was built at the other end. They managed only two shots of their own, but restricted Paris FC to nothing better than half of their six attempts finding the target, and kept a second away clean sheet of the season after doing the same on the opening weekend at Toulouse. It is the profile of a Lyon side that has taken points in every match so far without needing to dominate the ball or the chance count.

Both unbeaten, and level again at 8 points

Coming into the round, Lyon held Ligue 1's Champions League qualifying spot in 4th and Paris FC the Europa League place right behind them in 5th, both level on 7 points from three games. The draw takes both to 8 points from four matches — two adrift of the three teams level at the top on 10 (Lille, Monaco and Rennes) — but with the unbeaten record intact for both heading into the international break.

Both sides break for internationals with their unbeaten records intact and little separating them in the table. Lyon still hold the direct route into next season's Champions League, and Paris FC the Europa League place directly below — a gap that is currently decided on secondary tiebreakers rather than points, and one that a single result either way could flip when Ligue 1 resumes for matchday 5.
