Willock and Hall Score in the First Seven Minutes as Newcastle End Hull's Unbeaten Run: 2-1

Newcastle United responded to Monday's chastening 4-1 defeat at Leeds United in the best possible way, racing into a two-goal lead inside seven minutes against Hull City and holding on for a 2-1 win at St James' Park that ended the Tigers' unbeaten start to the season.

Willock and Hall punish Hull inside seven minutes

Harvey Barnes was at the heart of both opening goals. His neat through-ball allowed Joe Willock to smash past Konstantinos Tzolakis inside three minutes, and Barnes turned provider again four minutes later, setting up left-back Lewis Hall for a pinpoint finish into the bottom-left corner. Newcastle led 2-0 before Hull had settled into the game.

Cho gives Hull hope, but Newcastle hold on

Substitute Mohamed-Ali Cho pulled one back for the Tigers in the 67th minute, and Hull pushed hard for an equaliser in the closing stages, but Newcastle withstood a late flurry of attacks to see out a result that got their season back on track.

A response after Elland Road

The win came four days after Matthias Jaissle suffered his first defeat as Newcastle head coach, a 4-1 loss at Leeds United in which the Magpies were overrun physically. This was a far more assured performance from the opening whistle, and it kept Newcastle's early-season points tally moving in the right direction after that setback.

Hull's unbeaten run ends

For Hull City, this was a first defeat of the season after an excellent start under Sergej Jakirović, who was named the Premier League's Manager of the Month for August after taking the newly promoted side to two wins and two draws from their opening four matches. Hull went into the round third in the table with eight points, and this was their first taste of losing since returning to the top flight for the first time in over a decade.
