Como go to the Maradona and win it in 34 minutes: Baturina and Douvikas sink Napoli

Napoli's first home game of the season lasted 34 minutes as a contest. By then Como were 2-1 up, and they did not give the lead back.

Martin Baturina opened it on 17 minutes, finishing a cutback from Assane Diao on the right. Rasmus Hojlund levelled on 30 with a left-footed shot from the edge of the area. Four minutes later Napoli lost the ball playing out from the back — Amir Anguissa the man in trouble — and Anastasios Douvikas was there to finish.

Fabregas gets it right at the Maradona

Como had more of the ball, more shots on target and the calmer heads. Napoli sent on Kevin De Bruyne after the break and pushed, but Alex Meret was the busier goalkeeper by full time and Como's back line held. It is Massimiliano Allegri's first league defeat as Napoli coach.

Allegri's first defeat, and a pattern that repeated

This was Massimiliano Allegri's first defeat since taking over at Napoli. Eight days earlier he had opened his tenure with a 2-0 win at Genoa, Kevin De Bruyne scoring and setting up Antonio Vergara in the space of five second-half minutes off the bench. The manner of the Como defeat — a fast start unravelling once the opponent settled into the game — turned out to be a preview rather than a one-off.

Six days after this loss, Napoli led 2-0 inside 53 minutes at San Siro through Matteo Politano and Rasmus Hojlund, only for Inter to score three times, Lautaro Martinez completing his brace in the first minute of stoppage time, to win 3-2. Two defeats in three matches leave Napoli 11th in Serie A on three points, with one win, no draws and two losses, five goals scored and five conceded for a goal difference of zero — a difficult opening month for Allegri to build from before the September international break.

Como's start becomes one of the season's early stories

Como had not lost when they arrived in Naples. They opened the season with a 1-1 draw at Udinese in which they had 59% of the ball, twenty shots and ten corners to Udinese's one, and only Anastasios Douvikas's second-half finish rescued a point their control deserved more than a draw did. The win at the Maradona was their first of the campaign, delivered inside 34 minutes by Martin Baturina and Douvikas.

Cesc Fabregas's side did not stop there. Five days after beating Napoli, Como went to Genoa and scored four times — Baturina, Nico Paz and an Assane Diao double, either side of a full debut off the bench for new signing Moise Kean — to win 4-1 and move into the Champions League places. Three matches into the season, Como sit third on seven points, two wins and a draw from three games, with seven goals scored and three conceded, four points clear of the Napoli side they beat here.
