Lille 2-0 Troyes: Tiago Santos opens it, Ethan Mbappé seals it in stoppage time

Lille did not need a dramatic finish this time. Tiago Santos put them ahead after 18 minutes, they controlled the rest of the afternoon without ever looking troubled, and Ethan Mbappé added a second in the third minute of stoppage time to make the scoreline match the performance. Troyes, who had shipped six at Strasbourg the week before, were kept off the scoresheet entirely.

Tiago Santos, scoring instead of assisting

On the opening weekend of the season it was Olivier Giroud who set up Tiago Santos for the only goal of a 2-0 win over Angers. Four matchdays later, Santos did it himself — no assist required, just a finish in the 18th minute that put Lille in control before Troyes had settled into the game. It is the kind of secondary scoring threat Davide Ancelotti's Lille have been able to call on all season without needing to lean on any one player: Giroud has been the creator and finisher of headline moments elsewhere, and here it was a full-back turned goalscorer doing the damage instead.

Ethan Mbappé's stoppage-time insurance

The scoreline stayed at 1-0 until the very end, with Troyes never generating enough to suggest an equaliser was coming. Ethan Mbappé — younger brother of Kylian Mbappé and now a first-team option at Lille — settled any remaining doubt with a goal in the third minute of added time, turning a nervy one-goal cushion into a comfortable 2-0 that reflected the balance of the afternoon far better than a single strike would have.

Four matchdays unbeaten, and a rough patch for Troyes

This was Lille's third win in four Ligue 1 matches this season, with the other result a draw at home to PSG — still unbeaten in the league heading into the international break. Before kickoff they sat 4th on 7 points, in the Champions League qualifying position, level with Paris FC and Lyon above them but behind on goal difference. Three points from Troyes moves them to 10, keeping them firmly in the group chasing the top of the table.

For Troyes, this is the opposite story. They had taken 4 points from their first three matches — a draw, a win, then that heavy 2-6 defeat at Strasbourg — and sat 9th going into the weekend. A second defeat in two matchdays, without scoring, is a reminder of how thin the gap is for a promoted side between competing in mid-table and sliding toward the bottom third of the division.

It is also four matchdays into Davide Ancelotti's first season in charge at Lille, and he is still without a domestic defeat — three wins and a draw against the champions, in his first senior head-coaching job anywhere after several years assisting his father Carlo at Napoli, Bayern Munich, Everton and Real Madrid.

Lille go into the international break as one of the form sides in Ligue 1, unbeaten domestically and pushing the clubs above them on goal difference alone. Troyes, meanwhile, need the break to regroup: back-to-back defeats in which they have shipped eight goals and scored none is not the platform a newly promoted club wants heading into the second block of fixtures.
