Lille 1-1 Brest: Olivier Giroud's penalty cancels out Mama Baldé's early strike
Mama Baldé scored inside six minutes at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, and Lille needed until the 64th minute for Olivier Giroud's penalty to level it, as second-placed Lille drew 1-1 with Brest.
Mama Baldé needed only six minutes to put Brest ahead at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, finishing off a pass from Gautier Lloris before the home crowd had settled into Saturday's early kickoff. Lille, second in Ligue 1 before the match, needed until the 64th minute to find a way back, Olivier Giroud converting the penalty that salvaged a point. Lille 1-1 Brest was not the response Davide Ancelotti's side wanted at home to a team sitting seventh in the table, but it also was not the damaging defeat that the sixth-minute goal threatened to become.
Baldé strikes early
Baldé's goal, set up by right-back Gautier Lloris inside the opening six minutes, came against the division's second-placed side and was enough, on its own, to have Lille chasing the game for almost an hour. The Guinea-Bissau international, who moved to Brest in 2024 after spells including Troyes and Dijon, extended an attack that had scored five in its previous match, a 5-1 win over Angers, after barely troubling PSG's goal the week before that.
Giroud's penalty, and nothing more
Olivier Giroud, back in Ligue 1 since the summer of 2025 after leaving LAFC, won and converted the penalty that got Lille level in the 64th minute — enough to rescue a point, but not to find a winner in the half hour that followed. Davide Ancelotti's side made four substitutions from the 70th minute on, including Nabil Bentaleb and Calvin Verdonk, as they searched for a way past a Brest defence that had already done its most important job.
France's record scorer, still leading the line
Giroud remains France's record international goalscorer, a mark he set by passing Thierry Henry in December 2022 at the World Cup in Qatar. He is still the senior figure this Lille attack turns to in a tight game, and Saturday's penalty was exactly that kind of moment — scored in a forward line that also started 18-year-old Ethan Mbappé, Kylian Mbappé's younger brother, who joined Lille from PSG in 2024 and has already scored against his former club once since.
A foul-heavy afternoon
Lille had the better of the chances without making them count twice. They had 67.3% of possession and five shots on target to Brest's two, winning five corners to two — but needed the penalty to get anything at all from that control. Brest's afternoon, by contrast, ran through 20 fouls to Lille's 12, the kind of disruptive, foul-prone defending that can turn a game ugly when a side is content to protect a point.
| Stat | Lille | Brest |
|---|---|---|
| Possession | 67.3% | 32.7% |
| Shots on target | 5 | 2 |
| Pass accuracy | 588 (91%) | 250 (78%) |
| Corners | 5 | 2 |
| Fouls conceded | 12 | 20 |
| Offsides | 3 | 0 |
| Yellow cards | 1 | 2 |
A stop-start few weeks for Lille
This draw is the latest entry in a run that has swung between the two extremes without settling: a 2-0 win at Angers, a 2-2 home draw with PSG, a win at Toulouse, a Champions League defeat to Real Betis, a win over Troyes, a league loss at Nice, a win over Le Havre, and that 3-0 Champions League defeat at Arsenal in midweek — two wins, one draw and two losses across their last five matches when European football is included. Lille have not put together consecutive wins since the turn of September, and Saturday's draw with Brest fits the pattern rather than breaking it.
Where it leaves both sides
The point takes Lille to 14 points from seven games, level with Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco at the top but 2nd on the head-to-head goals-scored tiebreaker, behind only PSG's win over Strasbourg on the same day. Brest move up to 8th on 9 points, their run extending to two wins, two draws and two defeats across their last six matches.
- 6' — Mama Baldé (Brest), assisted by Gautier Lloris
- 64' — Olivier Giroud (Lille), penalty
