Lille 1-0 Le Havre: Dilane Bakwa scores inside five minutes, and it's enough all afternoon

Dilane Bakwa's fifth-minute finish was the only goal of the game, and it held up even after Le Havre had more of the ball and more shots on target — Ayumu Seko's 61st-minute red card left the visitors to play almost half the match with ten men.

Lille needed five minutes to win this and eighty-five more to make sure of it. Dilane Bakwa's early finish settled the contest before Le Havre had really had a touch, and even though the visitors had the better of the possession and more shots on target over the rest of the afternoon, they never found the equaliser. Ayumu Seko's red card in the 61st minute, for a challenge that left Le Havre a man down for the final half-hour, made the task harder still, and Lille's defence — organised rather than spectacular — closed the game out at the Pierre-Mauroy.

Bakwa, five minutes in, and gone again

The goal itself came fast enough that Le Havre barely had time to settle: Bakwa finished in the fifth minute, his effort enough on its own because nothing that followed in the remaining 85 could change the scoreline. It is becoming a pattern for the winger, on a season-long loan at Lille from Nottingham Forest after a difficult year in the Premier League that yielded just six starts. He had already scored in a 2-2 draw with PSG earlier this season — his first involvement in Ligue 1 colours this term going straight into the back of the net — and now he has done it again, this time deciding the game inside five minutes rather than doubling a lead late on.

Seko's red card changes the shape of the afternoon

Le Havre's response to going behind so early was better than the final numbers over 90 minutes suggest — they finished with 53% of the possession and two shots on target to Lille's one. But Ayumu Seko's dismissal in the 61st minute turned a game Le Havre were still competing in into one they had to survive. Rassoul Ndiaye and Djibril Ouziad both picked up yellow cards either side of the sending-off as the visitors tried to hold their shape with ten men, and by the end Lille were defending a one-goal lead against a side that had been reduced to chasing the game without the numbers to do it.

A mixed patch for Davide Ancelotti's side

Lille came into this on the back of two defeats in their last three league matches — beaten at home by Real Betis in the Champions League, then away at Nice — sandwiched around a win over Troyes, and sitting 4th on 10 points from five Ligue 1 games before kickoff. A narrow, nervy win of exactly the kind that doesn't show up as impressive in the stats column is still three points, and it arrests what had briefly looked like the start of a slide for Davide Ancelotti's side after an unbeaten opening month of the season.

Le Havre stay rooted to the bottom

For Le Havre, this is the extension of a run that had already produced one win in five — and that one win was back in August. They went into matchday 6 bottom of the table on 2 points, without a victory in five, having lost three and drawn two, including back-to-back defeats to Brest and Toulouse either side of a goalless draw with Angers. A performance with more of the ball and more shots on target than their opponents will be some consolation for the performance itself, but the result keeps them exactly where the table already had them.

Giroud watches from the wings

Olivier Giroud, now 40 and back in Ligue 1 with Lille after 13 years away in England, Italy and the United States, was named among the substitutes rather than the starting XI for this one — Ngal'ayel Mukau and Gaetan Perrin playing in the forward positions instead, with Bakwa providing the goal threat from the flank. Giroud extended his contract at Lille in June, through 2027, having scored 11 goals across all competitions last season; he remains the senior figure in a squad captained by Benjamin André, there to be called on rather than to start every week at 40 years old.

What's next

Lille went into this round 4th in Ligue 1 on 10 points, and three points from a struggling Le Havre side should keep them in the group chasing the European places once the rest of matchday 6 is settled. Le Havre remain bottom on 2 points, still searching for only their second win of the season and now facing a trip with one fewer body available after Seko's suspension.
