Leeds power to third with a 4-1 rout of Newcastle at Elland Road

Leeds United tore through Newcastle United on Monday night, three goals inside 13 first-half minutes at Elland Road turning a meeting of two unbeaten sides into a rout. The final score, 4-1, undersells how one-sided it was before Bazoumana Touré's stoppage-time consolation off the bench.

Ao Tanaka's shot on 32 minutes took two touches off Newcastle bodies on its way in, the last one off Lewis Miley for what went down as an own goal. Two minutes later Jayden Bogle turned home the rebound after Dominic Calvert-Lewin's header was saved, and right on the stroke of half-time Calvert-Lewin got the goal his performance deserved, poking the ball under pressure as it squirmed past Lukáš Horníček. 3-0 at the break, and Newcastle had barely had the ball.

Noah Okafor added a fourth on 59 minutes to end any doubt. Newcastle's reply came far too late to matter: Touré, on as a substitute, pulled one back in the 90th minute. In between, Matias Fernández-Pardo escaped a penalty shout for a handball inside the third minute — the one moment in the whole night that went Newcastle's way.

Newcastle made the trip without Anthony Elanga, who missed out through injury. Jaissle said afterwards that the winger would have an MRI scan the following week and that the issue could keep him out for some time — a blow for a side that had leaned heavily on him for pace out wide in the opening month.

Two unbeaten runs, one result

Both clubs had gone three matches without defeat before kick-off, and the result flipped that record for only one of them. Leeds had won at Nottingham Forest, then drawn at home to Brentford and away at Brighton — a side building results without conceding much. Newcastle's run under Jaissle had produced two draws either side of a win at Tottenham, and Monday was his first loss in the job.

The win takes Leeds to third with 8 points from four games — their best position at this stage of a season since 2000/01, and level on points with fourth-placed Hull City but ahead on goal difference. Newcastle drop to 12th on 5 points, their unbeaten start over after four matchweeks.
