Mainz thrash newly-promoted Hamburger SV 5-0, with Phillip Tietz scoring twice and Ransford Königsdörffer netting against his former club

Mainz 05 needed only 19 minutes to open the scoring away at Hamburger SV, and by full time at the Volksparkstadion they had put five goals past a newly promoted side still searching for a foothold back in the Bundesliga. Sheraldo Becker set the tone with the opener and then turned provider for two more, Phillip Tietz scored twice, and substitute Ransford Königsdörffer rounded off the scoring in stoppage time — against the club he had left as a free agent only weeks earlier.

Becker broke the deadlock in the 19th minute, finishing a move started by Kaishu Sano, then turned creator before half-time: his pass sent Phillipp Mwene through to make it 2-0 in the 41st. Tietz extended the lead four minutes into the second half, converting another Becker assist, and struck again in the 83rd minute off a pass from Jaesung Lee. Königsdörffer, on from the bench, completed the rout in second-half stoppage time, finishing off a Mwene assist to make it five without reply.

A goal against his old club

The final goal carried some extra weight. Königsdörffer had spent the previous season and a half at Hamburger SV, making 33 Bundesliga appearances and scoring five goals in 2025-26, before his contract at the Volksparkstadion expired on 30 June 2026 and he joined Mainz on a free transfer over the summer. Coming off the bench to score the fifth goal of a 5-0 win, on his first competitive return to his old home ground, is about as pointed a note as a substitute appearance can end on.

Back-to-back 5-0 defeats

For Hamburg, this turned out to be the first half of a miserable pair. A week later they were beaten 5-0 again, this time away at RB Leipzig, stretching their return to the top flight to three matches without a single goal scored and twelve conceded. It took until matchday 4, and a 2-1 home win over 1. FC Köln, for Hamburg to register their first goal, first win and first points of the season — which puts this defeat to Mainz squarely in the middle of as rough a start as any newly promoted side has had this campaign.

Four debuts in a five-goal loss

Head coach Merlin Polzin made four changes to the side beaten at Borussia Dortmund on the opening weekend, using the match to hand Bundesliga debuts to David Møller Wolfe, Zakaria El Ouahdi, Bilal Nadir and Terem Moffi. Mainz's Urs Fischer made two changes of his own, bringing in Stefan Posch and Kacper Potulski in place of Dominik Kohr and Danny da Costa.

What's next

The rout was Mainz's biggest win of the young season, but the form did not carry over: they lost 1-3 at home to Eintracht Frankfurt in their very next match, before recovering with a 4-3 away win at Borussia Mönchengladbach. For Hamburg, this result was just one chapter in what became the worst possible start to a top-flight return, before that eventual win over Köln finally arrived and gave Polzin's side something to build on.
