Ten-man Getafe hold Celta Vigo to a 1-1 draw at the Coliseum

Getafe and Celta Vigo shared the points in a 1-1 draw at the Coliseum on Monday, in a match settled as much by a sending-off as by either goal. Martín Satriano put the hosts ahead in the 21st minute, Carl Starfelt levelled for Celta early in the second half, and Zaid Romero's dismissal on 67 minutes meant Getafe had to see out the closing half hour with 10 men to hang on for the point.

Satriano broke the deadlock by getting in behind Celta's back three and finishing from close range. Celta had the better of the possession for long spells without troubling David Soria until the 57th minute, when Carl Starfelt rose above his marker at a corner and headed the equaliser past him. Ten minutes later the game turned again: Zaid Romero, already booked in the 55th minute, picked up a second yellow card and was sent off, leaving José Bordalás's side to defend the draw a man light for the rest of the afternoon.

The numbers underline how one-sided the game was in Celta's favour — more than double the possession and the shot count, and a higher expected-goals reading too — yet Claudio Giráldez's side still needed a set piece and a numerical advantage to avoid defeat. It was Getafe's low block, not their spell with an extra man, that did most of the work.

Getafe lined up in a 5-3-2: David Soria in goal behind a back five of Djené, Johan Mojica, Zaid Romero, Orel Mangala and Nemanja Gudelj, Kiko Femenía, Ramón Terrats and Mario Martín across midfield, and Martín Satriano and Enes Ünal leading the attack. Kiko Femenía lasted only eight minutes before he was replaced by Andrés García through injury, and Satriano himself went off hurt in the 73rd minute for Iván Azón. Celta set up in a 3-4-3: Ionuț Radu in goal, Carl Starfelt, Yoel Lago and Marcos Alonso across the back three, Javi Galán, Miguel Román, Ilaix Moriba and Jones El Abdellaoui in midfield, and a front three of Iago Aspas, Hugo González and Pablo Durán. Giráldez made a triple change just after the hour, sending on Javi Rueda, Sergio Carreira and Couhaib Driouech for Galán, Aspas and El Abdellaoui.

Form before kick-off

Getafe arrived off a mixed start to the season: an opening defeat away at Alavés, a 1-0 home win over Racing Santander, and another loss, 1-0 at Osasuna, in their previous outing — one win in three, with a single goal scored across those games. Celta's problem ran deeper: they had not won in the league all season and had not scored in either of their last two matches, a 2-0 home defeat to Athletic Club and a goalless draw away at Real Sociedad.

What came next

The draw turned out to be the middle leg of a longer wait for both sides. Getafe drew again at home to Deportivo the following week, then lost 1-0 at Real Betis with Mario Martín also sent off — the second time in three matches Bordalás's side finished with 10 men — before beating Málaga 1-0 in their next league fixture. Celta's search for a first win went on one round longer, a 1-1 draw at home to Málaga, before it finally arrived in emphatic fashion: a 5-0 thrashing of Racing Santander at Balaídos that ended a run of four draws and two defeats in their first six league games.
