Manchester United led this twice at Hill Dickinson Stadium and still walked away with a point instead of three. Bryan Mbeumo put them ahead a minute into the second half, Tyrique George levelled for Everton on 83, Benjamin Sesko restored the lead five minutes later — and then, deep into stoppage time, Ainsley Maitland-Niles curled in a debut goal from range that the home end will not forget quickly.
Maitland-Niles' 95th-minute leveller was the latest home goal ever scored at Hill Dickinson Stadium, and made him the first player to score on his Everton debut since Richarlison in August 2018.
A problem that keeps repeating for United
Manchester United have now conceded two or more goals in each of their first three league matches of the season. They had 18 fewer shots than Everton but more of the ball, and Luke Shaw's assist for Sesko's goal was not enough to see the game out.
The pattern was set on the opening weekend, when promoted Hull City won 2-0 at the MKM Stadium — Hull's first league victory over United since 1974 — with both goals coming from Regan Slater set pieces that United never got under control. A response followed seven days later: Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick as United came from behind against Leif Davis's early opener to beat Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford. The draw at Hill Dickinson Stadium means neither the heavy defeat nor the emphatic win has yet settled into anything United can rely on defensively.
Everton still unbeaten
For Everton, matchweek three extended a run rather than interrupting one. David Moyes's side opened the season with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, scored by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Thierno Barry against a Palace team that hit the post twice and finished with nearly double Everton's expected goals. A trip to Bournemouth produced a 1-1 draw, Alex Scott's finish for the hosts cancelled out by James Tarkowski's goal in the 91st minute after Djordje Petrovic had kept Bournemouth ahead with three separate saves. Three games in, Everton have not lost — a win and two draws, both of the draws salvaged by a goal after the 83rd minute.
The player who scored the equaliser
Ainsley Maitland-Niles is an Arsenal academy product who won the FA Cup with the club before loan spells at Ipswich Town, West Bromwich Albion, Roma and Southampton took him away from Emirates Stadium for good. A permanent move to Lyon followed in 2023, where he made close to 120 appearances across three seasons. Everton brought him back to the Premier League on a permanent deal from Lyon this summer, and his first involvement in an Everton shirt was the goal that turned a defeat into a point.
