Eintracht Frankfurt and Freiburg share the points in a 2-2 four-goal thriller

Eintracht Frankfurt twice led SC Freiburg at Deutsche Bank Park and twice were pegged back, in a 2-2 draw that cost the visitors their unbeaten start to the Bundesliga season. Frankfurt struck first through Younes Ebnoutalib's tap-in after a swift move down the left, before Freiburg levelled through Derry Scherhant cutting inside and finishing low. Jonathan Burkardt restored Frankfurt's lead within two minutes of that equaliser, heading in from Robin Koch's looping cross, and Scherhant nearly made it 2-2 before half-time when his free kick struck the post.

Suzuki completes the comeback

Freiburg found their second equaliser early in the second half, Yuito Suzuki smashing home a volley from a Scherhant chip in the 48th minute, and neither side found a winner despite further chances at both ends. It was a fair result on the balance of play — Opta's expected-goals model had the sides almost level, Frankfurt on 2.50 to Freiburg's 2.48.

The draw was Freiburg's first dropped points of the season after three straight wins that had them sitting top of the table, and it snapped a run in which they had conceded just once in three matches. Frankfurt, for their part, arrived on the back of a 3-1 win at Mainz and a mixed start that had also included a 3-3 draw with Union Berlin and a 1-4 loss to Augsburg — a run that this result did not really settle either way, adding a point without adding much certainty about which version of the team turns up next.

Frankfurt entered the round 9th in the Bundesliga table on 4 points from three games; the point from this draw keeps them in the bottom half of the table but with a fixture that could easily have gone the other way twice. Freiburg had opened the day top on 9 points from three wins out of three — the draw ends the perfect record but leaves Julian Schuster's side still among the Bundesliga's form teams heading into the international break, with the gap back to the chasing pack still comfortable enough to absorb one dropped result.
