Crystal Palace could not find a way past Newcastle United, losing 0-2 at Selhurst Park to a pair of goals either side of the hour mark. William Osula broke the deadlock two minutes into the second half, and Harvey Barnes doubled the lead eleven minutes later — enough for Newcastle to see out the remaining half hour comfortably.

Both goals came from the same side of the pitch. Jacob Murphy's pass picked out Osula for the opener in the 47th minute, and Amar Dedic supplied Barnes for the second on 58, Newcastle's right flank doing the damage twice in the space of eleven minutes against a Palace side that had kept the scoreline level for the whole of the first half.

It was a feisty afternoon by the finish: six players were booked in total, three from each side — Yéremy Pino, Anan Khalaili and Jaydee Canvot for Palace, Nico González, Fabian Schär and Lewis Hall for Newcastle. Canvot's caution came deep into stoppage time, the last incident of a game that had grown increasingly stretched as Palace searched for a way back in.

Palace's home form stays stubborn

This is Crystal Palace's third defeat in their last five matches, a stretch that also included a heavy 0-5 loss at Brighton and, in between, a 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest. The run leaves Pierre Sage's side with one of the worst goal differences in the division, and Palace have now lost more Premier League games than they have won this season.

Teams

Pierre Sage set Palace up in a 3-4-2-1: Walter Benítez in goal behind a back three of Axel Disasi, Jaydee Canvot and Chris Richards, Daichi Kamada, Adam Wharton, Tyrick Mitchell and Anan Khalaili across midfield, and Yéremy Pino and Dwight McNeil supporting Jean-Philippe Mateta. Darío Osorio and Eddie Nketiah came on from the bench.

Matthias Jaissle lined Newcastle up in a 4-2-3-1: Lukás Horníček in goal behind Dan Burn, Fabian Schär, Lewis Hall and Amar Dedic, Joe Willock and Joelinton screening, and Nico González, William Osula, Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy in support. Yoane Wissa, Anthony Elanga, Malick Thiaw, Jacob Ramsey and Sean Steur were the five introduced as Newcastle saw out the win.

Newcastle end a two-match losing run

For Newcastle, this was a response that had been needed. Matthias Jaissle's side arrived at Selhurst Park off the back of back-to-back defeats — 1-4 away at Coventry City and 0-1 at home to Aston Villa — and this third win of the season steadies a campaign that had been drifting into the bottom half.

What's next

Crystal Palace had gone into the weekend 16th on 7 points from seven games, with a goal difference of -8 already among the worst in the division and just one point above the relegation zone. Newcastle sat 14th on 8 points. The win stretches Matthias Jaissle's side further clear of Palace, who stay one of the division's more vulnerable sides heading into the next round.
