Borussia Dortmund open the Bundesliga season with a 2-0 win over 10-man Hamburger SV

Borussia Dortmund needed less than ten minutes to show what their summer business was for. Serhou Guirassy opened the scoring on 9 minutes, teed up by Konstantinos Karetsas — the €32 million signing from Genk, on the pitch for his competitive debut — and Dortmund never looked back on their way to a 2-0 win over Hamburger SV to open the 2026-27 Bundesliga.
Karetsas was the story of the first half, central to almost everything Dortmund tried going forward. The second goal came in first-half stoppage time and was one Hamburg gifted them: Sebastiaan Bornauw turned the ball into his own net, sending BVB in at the break in complete control.
A red card that made the second half academic
Hamburg had barely threatened before things got worse. Samuele Inácio, on as a substitute, was sent off on 77 minutes for a reckless slide tackle, leaving the newly-promoted side to play out the closing stages with ten men and no way back into the game.

The perfect start continued at Hoffenheim
Dortmund kept the run going three days later, coming from two goals down to beat TSG Hoffenheim 3-2 on matchday 2. Serhou Guirassy — the man who opened the scoring against Hamburg — struck again in Sinsheim and then set up Fabio Silva for the equaliser, finishing with a goal and an assist to take the match's man-of-the-match award as Niko Kovač marked his 50th Bundesliga game in charge of the club with a comeback win sealed by an 86th-minute own goal.
That result left Dortmund with six points from two games, still unbeaten and denied top spot only on goals scored — a much healthier position than the one Hamburg found themselves in after their own matchday 2 fixture.
Hamburg's promotion return gets no easier
Reduced to ten men at Signal Iduna Park, the newly-promoted side had no answer for Mainz either: Hamburg were beaten 5-0 at home by 1. FSV Mainz 05 on matchday 2, a result that left them without a goal in almost 180 minutes of Bundesliga football to open their return to the top flight.

Two matchdays in, Borussia Dortmund are 3rd in the Bundesliga on 6 points from two wins out of two, with a goal difference of +3 — level on points with the leaders but behind them on goals scored. Hamburger SV are bottom of the 18-club table, still without a point and with a goal difference of -7, the worst return in the division so far this season.
