Auxerre had not won a single point through their opening three Ligue 1 matches. C. Archer's goal at 74' at the Stade de l'Abbé-Deschamps changed that in one move, beating Nice 1-0 for the first win of their season.

Bottom of the table, and finally off the mark

The scale of the turnaround is worth spelling out. Auxerre had lost 2-5 to Lens, 1-3 to Angers and 1-3 to Lyon, conceding eleven goals and scoring four across those three games — bottom of the table on zero points before kickoff, the only side in Ligue 1 without a win or a draw to show for its start. Beating Nice does not undo that run on its own, but it is a first result to build from, and it came against a side that had not lost since the opening weekend.

Nice, unbeaten but still without a win

For Nice, this is a different kind of frustration. They had gone three matches without losing — a scoreless draw with Lorient, a 0-3 defeat to Paris FC sitting in between two draws, then a 1-1 draw with Le Mans — but had also gone three matches without winning, scoring only once in that stretch. A trip to the bottom club looked like the chance to fix that. Instead it is now four matches without a win, and their first defeat of the season alongside it.

Auxerre move off the foot of the table on 3 points, their first result of any kind this season. Nice, who had sat 15th on 2 points before kickoff, take their first loss and head into the international break still searching for a first Ligue 1 win under new management this term.
