Augsburg beat 10-man Schalke 3-0 to spoil the Royal Blues' Bundesliga return

Schalke's long-awaited return to the Bundesliga ended in a 3-0 defeat at Augsburg. The game turned on a red card, and Augsburg made the extra man count late.

Anton Kade's outside-of-the-boot cross found Michael Gregoritsch on 18 minutes, and the striker finished against the club he used to play for. Schalke stayed in it until the 62nd minute, when Ron Schallenberg caught Gregoritsch from behind as he broke clear and was shown a straight red.

Augsburg pull away

With Schalke down to 10, Kade curled in a second on 80 minutes from a Fabian Rieder pass, the ball going in off the post. Rodrigo Ribeiro added a third in stoppage time, set up by Youngwoo Seol, to make the final margin 3-0.

Schalke had more of the ball but the numbers underneath favoured Augsburg heavily, and once Schallenberg walked there was only one way the game was going.
