Atlético Madrid 2-0 Manchester United: a goal inside the first minute and a red card do the damage

Pablo Barrios scored with the game barely 60 seconds old and Leny Yoro saw red before Ademola Lookman added a second late on, as Atlético Madrid beat 10-man Manchester United 2-0 at the Metropolitano.

Manchester United's night at the Metropolitano was effectively over before most of the stadium had taken its seat. Pablo Barrios scored with the game just over a minute old, finishing off a move started by Álex Baena, and Atlético Madrid never had to come off the front foot again. A red card for Leny Yoro in the second half made the eventual 2-0 scoreline, sealed by substitute Ademola Lookman nine minutes from time, look like a formality by the end.

Barrios' finish set the tone for the entire night: Atlético pressed high from the kickoff, won the ball back inside United's own half within seconds, and were ahead before United had completed more than a handful of passes. United never really recovered their footing from there, and the game turned decisively against them in the 74th minute when Yoro was sent off, reducing Michael Carrick's side to 10 men for the final quarter of the match. Lookman, on for Alexander Sørloth, finished the game off in the 79th minute to make the margin match the balance of the contest.

A red card that confirmed a one-sided night

Marcus Rashford had already been booked in the 52nd minute as United's frustration grew, and Yoro's dismissal 22 minutes later meant Carrick's side spent the closing stages defending in numbers rather than looking for a way back into the match. Atlético, who also had Robin Le Normand booked late on, did not need the extra man advantage to control the game — they finished with more of the ball (57.8% to United's 42.2%) and were already comfortably on top before the sending-off turned a difficult night into an one-sided one.

Two very different starts to the league phase

This was Atlético's first win of the Champions League league phase after an opening 1-2 defeat away at Liverpool, a result in line with a club that has otherwise been one of La Liga's most in-form sides this season — four wins from their last five league outings in the archive, with 12 goals scored against four conceded in that run. Manchester United, by contrast, had opened their own league phase with a comfortable 4-0 home win over Sabah, and arrived in Madrid on the back of a mixed Premier League campaign that has produced only one win in their last five domestic matches. Beating a team playing with that kind of attacking confidence, away from home, was always going to be the harder of United's two opening Champions League assignments — and it proved exactly that.

Carrick's selection held few surprises

United lined up in a 4-2-3-1 with Bruno Fernandes handed the keys in behind Rashford, and made five changes from the bench across the match — Joshua Zirkzee, Mason Mount, Amad Diallo, Harry Maguire and Matheus Cunha all introduced as Carrick searched for a route back into the game once his side went down to 10 men. None of it changed the course of a match that had been shaped, in effect, by the opening sequence of play.

What's next

Atlético Madrid, 2nd in La Liga on 19 points from eight games, take their Champions League form into a European schedule that already looks far healthier than it did after matchday 1. Manchester United sit 13th in the Premier League on just six points from six games, and this defeat leaves them with ground to make up in the league phase table before the turn of the year — a red card and a goal conceded in the first minute the kind of start that leaves very little room for a team already short on momentum.
