Lazar Samardzic scores deep into stoppage time as Atalanta edge Bologna 1-0

For most of ninety minutes, this looked like the afternoon Bologna finally got something out of their season. Then stoppage time arrived, and it turned into another one they will want to forget.

Atalanta beat Bologna 1-0 at their Bergamo home, and the winner did not arrive until deep into added time: substitute Lazar Samardzic curled a left-footed effort past Lukasz Skorupski to snatch all three points from a game the hosts had not controlled. 🔵⚫

Bologna have the better of it, and nothing to show

Bologna were the sharper side for long spells. Tommaso Cambiaghi hit the post in the second half, one of several moments where the visitors looked more likely to score than the hosts. Half-time came and went goalless, and it stayed that way deep into the closing stages.

Atalanta made three changes chasing the goal: Nicola Zalewski replaced Charles De Ketelaere on 55 minutes, then Nikola Krstović and Samardzic came on together on 68 minutes for Gianluca Scamacca and Ederson. Krstović picked up a yellow card five minutes after coming on.

Samardzic wins it in the sixth minute of stoppage time

It looked to be heading for a draw that would have flattered nobody until Samardzic, played in by Zalewski, took a touch on the edge of the area, turned and bent a left-footed shot that dipped under Skorupski and in off the far post. Deep into stoppage time, it was enough to win the game.

It is a result that will not sit well with Bologna, who were the better team for most of the afternoon and have now lost two from two without scoring a goal. Atalanta, by contrast, take a second straight win despite an off-day, which is its own kind of statement early in the season.
