Morocco equalize in stoppage time, beat the Netherlands on penalties and keep surprising the world
Issa Diop headed home a last-gasp equalizer, Bounou was once again the hero in the shootout and Morocco knocked the Netherlands out 3-2 on penalties to reach the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup.
Some games feel scripted in advance. Morocco dominated the match almost from start to finish, watched the Netherlands open the scoring against the run of play, equalized in stoppage time and went to penalties wearing the same calm face they showed in 2022. The result: Bounou was a hero once again, and the African side knocked out yet another European power. 3-2 on penalties, after 1-1 in normal time and extra time.
For the Netherlands, who had been unbeaten in 15 straight World Cup matches (not counting shootouts), it is one of the most painful exits of the last few years. For Morocco, it is another chapter in a story that keeps proving 2022 was no fluke.
Their only previous World Cup meeting
The Netherlands and Morocco had met once at a World Cup: in 1994, also in the United States, in the group stage. That day the Oranje won comfortably 2-1, with goals from Dennis Bergkamp and Bryan Roy. Thirty-two years later, the story flipped — and this time it was knockout football.
Outside of World Cups, the two had also played two friendlies: Morocco 2-1 in 1999, the Netherlands 2-1 in 2017. With tonight's result, the all-time head-to-head is now completely even: 2-2.
The Dutch World Cup curse goes on
Few national teams have such a strange relationship with the World Cup as the Netherlands: three finals played, zero titles. The Clockwork Orange shone in 1974, 1978 and 2010, only to stumble at the final hurdle every time. Going out in the round of 32 in 2026 joins the list of their most frustrating recent exits — second only to missing the 2018 tournament altogether.
| Year | Stage | Eliminated by |
|---|---|---|
| 2010 | Runner-up | Spain (final, extra time) |
| 2014 | 3rd place | Argentina (semis, penalties) |
| 2018 | Did not qualify | — |
| 2022 | Quarterfinals | Argentina (penalties) |
| 2026 | Round of 32 | Morocco (penalties) |
Morocco: from surprise package to genuine power
For decades, Morocco were a background story at World Cups — a qualification here, a round-of-16 exit there. Then came 2022 and the first ever semifinal by an African and Arab nation, with Spain and Portugal sent home along the way. In 2026 the script changed completely: the Netherlands now join the list of European giants taken down by the Atlas Lions.
| Year | Stage | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 1986 | Round of 16 | West Germany 1-0 |
| 2022 | Semifinal | France 2-0 (4th place) |
| 2026 | Round of 32 | Eliminated the Netherlands on penalties |
The Dutch standouts
Three names sum up this Dutch squad. Cody Gakpo, of Liverpool, the quick forward fresh off last season's Premier League title, opened the scoring. Virgil van Dijk, captain and center-back also at Liverpool, held the back line together as much as he could. And Frenkie de Jong, of Barcelona, is the kind of midfielder who works as a thermometer: when he plays well, the Oranje play well. Tonight, it wasn't enough.
The Moroccan standouts
For Morocco, the trio starts with Achraf Hakimi, of PSG, regarded by many as the best right-back in the world and captain of this team. Brahim Díaz, of Real Madrid, is the creative spark — he was the top scorer at the last AFCON with five goals. And the now-classic Yassine Bounou, of Al-Hilal, who saved two penalties from Spain back in 2022 and put on a similar show tonight, denying Crysencio Summerville from the spot in the shootout.
Trivia: the most valuable players from each side share the same price tag. Ryan Gravenberch (Netherlands) and Hakimi (Morocco) are both listed at €80 million on Transfermarkt's 2026 valuation.
How the match unfolded
Morocco owned the ball from start to finish — 70% possession, five shots on target to two, and an xG nearly six times higher than the Dutch. Even so, it was the Oranje who struck first: around the 70th minute, Gakpo pounced on one of the rare gaps in the Moroccan defense to put his side ahead.
The equalizer came when it had to come: deep into stoppage time. Chemsdine Talbi, who had just come on, delivered a perfect cross from the left, and Issa Diop rose unmarked to head it in at the 90+. Extra time was tight and goalless, and the game went to the lottery.
In the shootout, El Aynaoui smashed Morocco's first kick against the crossbar, but the Netherlands missed too. Bounou saved Summerville's effort, and Ismael Saibari stepped up to convert the decisive penalty and seal it 3-2.

Next opponent
In the round of 16, Morocco face Canada — a tie that, on paper, clearly favors the Africans. If they keep this level of performance, it is very possible the Atlas Lions will once again be fighting for a place in the semifinals, just like they did in 2022.
