Brazil's 2026 World Cup squad: Ancelotti's 26, the injury absences and what happened next

Carlo Ancelotti named Brazil's 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup on 18 June, at an event at the Museum of Tomorrow in Rio de Janeiro. It was the Italian's first World Cup call-up in charge of the Seleção, and it was defined by one return and three absences nobody wanted.

The return: Neymar, 34, called up by Ancelotti for the first time and back with Brazil after two years and seven months. The absences: Rodrygo, Éder Militão and Estêvão, all ruled out by serious injuries in the weeks before the announcement. There was a fourth blow after the list was published — Wesley was hurt in the friendly against Egypt and made way for Atalanta midfielder Éderson.

What the list said about the team

Nine forwards and nine defenders against five midfielders: the balance already pointed to a Brazil that intended to settle games out wide and in transition rather than by controlling midfield. With Rodrygo and Estêvão out, the attack leaned on Vinicius Júnior and Raphinha, with Neymar as the card up the sleeve and recent European regulars — Matheus Cunha, Igor Thiago, Rayan, Luiz Henrique — filling the rest.

In midfield the bet was experience: Casemiro, Bruno Guimarães, Fabinho and Paquetá, with Botafogo's Danilo Santos the only domestic-league presence in the department. Six of the 26 were playing club football in Brazil.

What happened to this group

Brazil were drawn in Group C with Morocco, Haiti and Scotland, opening on 13 June against the Moroccans in New Jersey — a 1-1 draw. Two 3-0 wins followed, over Haiti and Scotland, and qualification came without much alarm.

In the round of 32, Brazil beat Japan 2-1. In the round of 16 they lost 2-1 to Norway and went out — ending the first 48-team World Cup without reaching the quarter-finals. Spain won the tournament, beating Argentina 1-0 in the final.

Seen from August, Ancelotti's list looks less like a selection problem than an availability one: a coach who lost Rodrygo, Militão and Estêvão to injury before a ball was kicked, and Wesley after that, assembled an emergency attack and still reached the round of 16. What was missing wasn't in the squad list.
