Dortmund 1-2 Bayern: Olise ran the Klassiker, and the Supercup stayed in Munich
Nathaniel Brown finished off an Olise pass on 28 minutes, Olise scored the second in first-half stoppage time, and Dortmund's reply arrived too late. Bayern retained the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup in front of 81,365 people at Signal Iduna Park.
Bayern Munich went to Signal Iduna Park, took the Klassiker away inside 46 minutes and left with the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup for the second year running. Dortmund had no shot on target in the first half — none at all — while Bayern had eight attempts and 64% of the ball. By the time Borussia found a way back into it, the game had already been decided by the man on Bayern's right wing.
Michael Olise made the first goal and scored the second. On 28 minutes he found Nathaniel Brown for the opener; in first-half stoppage time he took the second himself. Fábio Silva pulled one back on 75 minutes, off the bench, with a finish that deflected in off Alphonso Davies. Dortmund finished with ten men after Ramy Bensebaini was sent off on 90 minutes. Final score 1-2, attendance 81,365, and the man of the match award went to Olise without much of an argument.
A first half in one direction
Vincent Kompany's side did not so much dominate as monopolise. Eight shots to nothing before the break, Joshua Kimmich metronomic in the middle, Olise pulling Dortmund's left side apart every time he got the ball. Brown's goal came exactly from that pattern; Olise's own arrived in the last seconds of the half, the worst possible moment for a team already looking for the dressing room.
Dortmund did have the ball in the net before that. Bensebaini headed one in on 42 minutes and it was ruled out for offside after a VAR check — a small cruelty for a player who would end the night walking off after a late challenge on Ismael Saibari.
Niko Kovač changes it at half-time
Kovač sent on Giannis Konstantelias at the break and Dortmund finally started to play. Maximilian Beier, Joey Veerman and Fábio Silva followed just after the hour, and it was Silva who scored on 75, the ball flicking off Davies on its way past Manuel Neuer. For roughly fifteen minutes Signal Iduna Park believed it.
It did not last. Bensebaini's red on 90 minutes ended any realistic route to an equaliser, and Bayern saw out the stoppage time with the ball at their feet. Gregor Kobel had already made eight saves; without him the scoreline would have been embarrassing rather than close.

The line-ups
Dortmund started Kobel in goal behind Joane Gadou, Waldemar Anton (captain) and Bensebaini, with Daniel Svensson and Julian Ryerson wide, Jobe Bellingham and Felix Nmecha in midfield, Konstantinos Karetsas and Samuele Inácio either side of Serhou Guirassy. Niko Kovač used all five changes: Konstantelias at half-time, then Beier, Veerman, Silva and Marcel Sabitzer.
Bayern lined up with Neuer (captain); Konrad Laimer, Jonathan Tah, Kim Min-jae, Josip Stanišić; Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlović; Olise, Brown, Luis Díaz and Harry Kane. Kompany brought on Davies on 68 minutes — in time to deflect Dortmund's goal in — plus Saibari and Tom Bischof.
What it means
Bayern won this fixture in Stuttgart last August and have now kept it, this time in the loudest ground in Germany against the club that finished second to them in the Bundesliga and only got into this match because Bayern won the DFB-Pokal as well. Dortmund's second half was genuinely better and the xG gap (2.35 to 1.11) is narrower than the first forty-five minutes suggested — but the trophy is decided in ninety, not in the half you played well. The Bundesliga season proper starts on 28 August.
