Bayern open the title defence with a 5-1 win over Stuttgart that got out of hand fast
Stuttgart drew level through Josha Vagnoman at 52'. Six minutes later they were 3-1 down, and Bayern kept going until it was 5-1 at the Allianz Arena.
For about an hour this was a contest. Then it was not. Bayern Munich beat VfB Stuttgart 5-1 to open the 2026-27 Bundesliga, and the gap between how the game looked at 52 minutes and how it looked at 58 tells the whole story.
Dayot Upamecano had headed Bayern in front on 21 minutes, meeting a Joshua Kimmich delivery. Stuttgart stayed in it, and just after the hour Josha Vagnoman levelled — 1-1, and a real game at the Allianz Arena.
Six minutes that ended it
It lasted three minutes. Kimmich picked out Michael Olise on 55, and Olise finished low for 2-1. Three minutes after that Vagnoman turned the ball into his own net under pressure, and 3-1 became the score that took the sting out of the night.
Bayern did not ease off. Aleksandar Pavlovic made it 4-1 on 82, set up by Ismael Saibari, and in the second minute of stoppage time Saibari teed up Luis Diaz for the fifth. Vincent Kompany's side had 21 shots to Stuttgart's 11 and an expected-goals count of 3.93 to 0.86 — the scoreline, for once, undersold the balance of play rather than flattering it.
